Understanding Lung Cancer: What you need to know

Updated: Jul 30, 2025

Lung cancer remains one of the most common and deadliest forms of cancer worldwide, but with awareness and early action, lives can be saved. Experts emphasize the importance of knowing your risks, understanding the signs, and taking proactive steps to protect your lung health.

What Is Lung Cancer?

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in one or both lungs. The two main types are non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), which accounts for about 85% of cases, and small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which grows more quickly but is less common.

Risk Factors to Know

  • Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, responsible for approximately 80–90% of cases.

  • Secondhand smoke, exposure to radon gas, asbestos, and air pollution also increase the risk.

  • Even non-smokers can develop lung cancer, especially with prolonged exposure to environmental toxins or a family history of the disease.

Warning Signs

Lung cancer may not cause symptoms early on. When it does, signs can include:

  • Persistent coughing

  • Shortness of breath

  • Chest pain

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Coughing up blood

If you or someone you love experiences these symptoms, speak with a healthcare provider right away.

Early Detection Saves Lives

Low-dose CT scans can detect lung cancer early—when it's most treatable. These screenings are especially important for adults aged 50–80 with a history of heavy smoking. Talk to your doctor about your risk and whether screening is right for you.

Prevention & Support

  • Quit smoking or avoid starting—help and resources are available.

  • Test your home for radon, a naturally occurring gas that can cause lung cancer.

  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle with regular exercise and a balanced diet.

  • Support loved ones by encouraging checkups and sharing facts.
